In a surprise move, President Joe Biden has overturned a last-ditch decision by the Trump administration to move U.S. Space Command headquarters to Alabama. The decision, which was announced on Monday, was based on the recommendation of Gen. James Dickinson, the head of Space Command. Dickinson argued that moving the headquarters now would jeopardize military readiness, particularly as the U.S. races to compete with China in space.
The decision was met with mixed reactions. Colorado lawmakers praised the move, while Alabama officials slammed it as a political maneuver. “This is a victory for national security,” said Sen. John Hickenlooper, D-Colo. “Keeping Space Command in Colorado will ensure that we have the best possible chance of deterring and defeating any threats in space.” “This is a slap in the face to Alabama and to the men and women who serve in our military,” said Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Ala., chairman of the House Armed Services Committee. “This decision was made for political reasons, not for national security.” The decision to move Space Command headquarters to Alabama was made by former President Donald Trump in the final days of his administration.
The move was controversial, with many arguing that it was based on politics rather than military necessity. Biden’s decision to reverse the move is a win for Colorado, but it is also a victory for those who believe that military decisions should be made based on national security, not politics. The fact that NORAD has its headquarters on Peterson Space Force Base seems to bolster the decision to keep the Space Force Headquarters in Colorado and the Rocky Mountain Region.
U.S. Space Command was officially established in August 2019. The command is responsible for organizing, training, and equipping space forces for the defense of the United States and its allies. The initial plan was to temporarily base Space Command headquarters at Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado Springs. However, in the final days of his administration, former President Donald Trump decided to move the headquarters to Huntsville, Alabama.
