Thousands of Tarantulas to Migrate in Colorado

The annual tarantula migration is underway in southeastern Colorado, and thousands of the eight-legged creatures are expected to make the journey in the coming weeks.

The migration typically takes place between late August and early September, when the weather starts to cool down. The tarantulas, which are known for their hairy bodies and venomous fangs, are attracted to the warmer temperatures and drier conditions found in the grasslands.

The migration begins when the male tarantulas emerge from their burrows in search of mates. The females, who are larger and more aggressive than the males, remain in their burrows until they are ready to lay their eggs.

The tarantulas typically travel at night, and they can be seen crossing roads and trails. They are not aggressive creatures, but they can bite if they feel threatened.

The best places to see the tarantula migration are in the Comanche National Grassland near La Junta and Springfield. The grasslands are home to a large population of tarantulas, and there are several viewing areas where visitors can safely observe the migration.
