Untaming Curiosity: Montana WILD Booms with Nature-Hungry Learners

Nestled against the backdrop of Helena’s rugged mountains, Montana WILD isn’t just a building. It’s a portal to discovery, a laboratory of wonder, and a hive of buzzing hands and inquisitive minds. And in 2023, this haven for environmental exploration saw its doors swing open wider than ever before.

Forget the image of dusty dioramas and hushed halls. Montana WILD pulsed with the energy of 17,000 curious drop-in visitors, their eyes glued to interactive exhibits and their fingers itching to dissect owl pellets. Virtual field trips transported over 5,500 students onto windswept prairies and into dense pine forests, while nearly 4,200 others swapped classrooms for the center’s immersive learning space.

But the numbers whisper only half the story. Montana WILD, a branch of Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks, didn’t just welcome more guests; it ignited their inner explorer. Children marveled at the mysteries of animal migration with radio telemetry kits, their fingers tracing invisible paths across detailed maps. Bear safety wasn’t just a lecture; it was a dynamic game, hearts pounding as stuffed grizzlies lurked around corners. Wildlife yoga wasn’t just downward-facing dog; it was a playful journey mimicking the grace of mountain lions and the stillness of owls.

“We’re not here to fill heads with facts,” Program Manager Corie Bowditch declares with a grin. “We want to set hearts on fire.”

And set hearts aflame they did. Students delved into the intrigue of the Endangered Species Act, dissecting its intricacies with the scalpel of critical thinking. Black-footed ferrets, once teetering on the brink of extinction, became symbols of hope and resilience. Skulls transformed into puzzles, each bony curve and indentation whispering tales of adaptation and survival.

But Montana WILD’s reach extended beyond Helena’s city limits. Thanks to a transportation grant, students from as far as Malta and Eureka, towns cradled in distant valleys, had their chance to step into the center’s vibrant universe.

2024 promises even wilder adventures. An AmeriCorps member joins the team, eager to unleash a torrent of fresh ideas and programs. Collaborations with partner organizations deepen, weaving a wider net of discovery across Montana’s breathtaking landscapes.

“We’re just getting started,” Bowditch says, her eyes sparkling with the glint of a seasoned adventurer. “There’s a whole world of wonder waiting to be explored, and Montana WILD is the compass.”

So, whether you’re a seasoned naturalist or a wide-eyed child ready for your first wildlife encounter, Montana WILD beckons. Push open the doors, step into the untamed embrace of curiosity, and let the wild ignite your spirit.
