Coyote Sightings on the Rise: What Rocky Mountain Residents Need to Know

My 13-year-old daughter recently came home surprised to see two coyotes at her school’s football field. Her teacher was equally taken aback, but the truth is, coyotes are all around us. With breeding season underway and denning season approaching, Idaho Fish and Game (IDFG) is reminding residents and outdoor enthusiasts to stay vigilant throughout the Rocky Mountains.

“Coyotes are usually shy,” explains Ryan Walrath, IDFG Regional Wildlife Manager, “but they become more protective of their mates and pups this time of year. This can increase the chance of encounters, especially where homes and hiking trails meet natural habitats.”

How to Minimize Coyote Conflicts

To reduce the chance of negative interactions with coyotes, IDFG emphasizes a few key strategies. First, never intentionally feed coyotes. Keep garbage and compost secure, clean up pet food right away, remove fallen fruit, and limit scattered birdseed. It’s also crucial to supervise pets at all times, particularly cats and dogs. Leash dogs while hiking and never let them interact with a coyote. If a coyote approaches, haze it away by yelling, waving your arms, and throwing small objects. You can also discourage coyotes from denning on your property by trimming dense vegetation.

Staying Safe Outdoors

When enjoying the outdoors, hike with others as coyotes are less likely to approach groups. Carry noisemakers like air horns or whistles to startle any coyotes that get too close. Above all, stay alert, especially at dawn and dusk when coyotes tend to be most active.

Understanding Coyotes’ Role

“Coyotes are a vital part of Idaho’s ecosystem,” says Walrath. “We can coexist peacefully by minimizing their attraction to human-related food sources.”
