Yellowstone National Park visitors should brace for some delays in 2024 as the park undertakes two significant road improvement projects. Work on the Lewis River Bridge and Yellowstone River Bridge is expected to cause traffic disruptions throughout the park’s busy season.

“These projects are essential for ensuring the safety and accessibility of Yellowstone’s incredible natural wonders,” said Superintendent Cam Sholly. “While we understand there will be inconveniences, the long-term benefits to visitor experience make these improvements worthwhile.”

Lewis River Bridge Project

Located along the park’s southern corridor, the Lewis River Bridge project will completely replace the existing structure. The modernized bridge will offer:

  • Improved safety: Built to current engineering standards for greater resilience.
  • Better trail access: New pullouts and paved parking for safer access to trails and river viewpoints.
  • Expanded facilities: The nearby Yellowstone River Picnic Area will be enlarged to handle increased visitor numbers.

The Yellowstone River Bridge project, focused on the park’s northern corridor, is also a substantial undertaking. It promises to reduce congestion and improve access to the vibrant communities of Silver Gate and Cooke City, Montana.

Park Officials Urge Visitors to Plan Ahead

With potential delays on both the northern and southern routes, Yellowstone officials emphasize the need for visitors to be informed.

“We strongly encourage you to check the status of roads before you go,” said park spokesperson Morgan Warthin. “Our website, the park’s app, and the text alert system are all great ways to stay up-to-date on road conditions and closures.”

Resources for Visitors:

  • Yellowstone website: https://www.nps.gov/yell/ – Check the “Park Roads” section
  • Yellowstone mobile app: Available for download
  • Text Alerts: Text “82190” to 888-777

Important Note: Construction timelines can change. Visitors are urged to factor in extra travel time and to consider alternative routes or visiting during less crowded seasons when possible.
