Colorado Holds Off on Raw Milk Legalization Amidst Safety Concerns

Colorado’s push to allow direct sales of raw milk this legislative session has stalled. This comes amidst renewed concerns about the safety of unpasteurized milk and a recent discovery of avian flu remnants in processed milk.

What is raw milk?

Raw milk is milk that comes directly from cows, goats, or sheep and hasn’t undergone pasteurization. Pasteurization is a process that uses heat to kill potentially harmful bacteria like E.coli, salmonella, and others. Advocates of raw milk claim it has health benefits, but these claims are not supported by scientific evidence.

Why is it dangerous?

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) strongly advises against consuming raw milk. It carries a significant risk of foodborne illness due to the presence of harmful bacteria. Pregnant women, children, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems are especially vulnerable.

Colorado’s Stance

Colorado currently has some of the strictest raw milk laws in the Western U.S.  The only legal way to obtain raw milk is through a “herd-share” program, where individuals essentially become partial owners of the animal to receive its milk.

A recent bill proposed allowing direct sales of raw milk, but it faced opposition and was ultimately shelved.  The bill included labeling requirements and regulations for producers.  However, some dairy farmers felt the proposed enforcement was overly strict.  Public health officials also continue to express concerns about potential food safety risks.

The Debate Continues

The debate over raw milk centers on consumer choice versus public health. While proponents argue for the right to buy raw milk, safety advocates and officials focus on the potential dangers of foodborne illness outbreaks. This issue remains contentious, and it’s likely Colorado will revisit legislation surrounding raw milk in the future.
