Experts are keeping a close eye on the sun after a surge of powerful solar flares erupted this week. The Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) has issued a Severe Geomagnetic Storm Watch for Friday evening, with the potential for disruptions to power grids, satellites, and communications systems.
The storm stems from a large sunspot cluster that’s been crackling with energy since Wednesday. It has already unleashed several flares and massive explosions known as coronal mass ejections (CMEs). These CMEs – essentially giant clouds of charged particles – are hurtling toward Earth.
If a CME scores a direct hit, it triggers a geomagnetic storm. These storms can overwhelm power grids, cause satellite malfunctions, and disrupt radio signals. The SWPC is working with NASA to monitor the situation and has alerted utility companies and satellite operators to brace for potential impacts.
On the bright side, this solar storm could also paint the night sky with dazzling auroras – the Northern Lights. A severe storm could push the auroras as far south as Alabama and Northern California, offering a rare treat for skywatchers.
