Sweitzer Lake State Park Set for Major Expansion: Public Invited to Share Input

Colorado Parks and Wildlife is unveiling ambitious plans for a significant expansion of Sweitzer Lake State Park, a beloved recreation destination nestled amidst the stunning mountain vistas near Delta.

Park Manager Scott Rist announced that the expansion project has been in the works for the past year, following CPW’s acquisition of neighboring properties, nearly doubling the park’s size from 314 acres to 593 acres. This expansion includes three additional ponds, creating new opportunities for both recreation and wildlife conservation.

CPW has carefully identified areas within the expanded park boundary that are suitable for development, while ensuring that other areas are left untouched to preserve natural habitats and support vital pollinator populations.

The proposed expansion includes a variety of exciting new amenities, such as four campground loops on the southwest end of the park, a multi-faceted recreation area featuring a ropes course, an archery range, and a recreational pond. Additionally, the plan incorporates several wetlands to benefit wildlife and a new visitor center complete with an amphitheater.

“This expansion represents a major upgrade for the park, with exciting new additions and enhancements to the existing facilities,” said Rist. “We’re eager to share these plans with the public, as they will significantly expand recreational opportunities, including camping, day-use areas, and water sports.”

CPW is actively seeking community input on the proposed expansion and will be hosting a public open house on May 30th from 3:30 to 6 p.m. in the community room of the Delta Public Library. Attendees will have the opportunity to view drawings and renderings of the expansion plans, ask questions, and provide feedback.

“We encourage everyone with an interest in the future of Sweitzer Lake State Park to attend the open house,” said Rist. “Your input is valuable as we work to create a park that serves the needs and interests of the entire community.”

Sweitzer Lake State Park, a popular destination for year-round recreation since 1954, is renowned for its warm, calm waters ideal for water skiing and wakeboarding. The park also offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountain ranges, including the Grand Mesa, West Elk, and San Juan.
