Boaters heading to Wyoming’s pristine waters this season should be aware of a change: the Newcastle aquatic invasive species (AIS) check station has a new home.
After a busy first year at the Gateway Travel Center, where over 1,400 watercraft were inspected and more than 100 decontaminated, the check station has moved half a mile east. It’s now located on Ranch Market Road near Crystal Park Campground, accessible via the gravel road behind Gateway Travel Center or from Highway 16.
“This move improves efficiency and safety,” explained Newcastle AIS Crew Lead Ken Feduff. “We’ve updated signage, but boaters should keep an eye out for the new location.”
The relocation comes as Wyoming faces growing threats from AIS, particularly zebra mussels recently discovered in South Dakota’s Pactola Reservoir. All watercraft entering the state between March 1st and November 30th must undergo inspection.
“Every boater plays a crucial role in safeguarding our waters,” emphasized Sheridan Region AIS Specialist Reed Moore. He urged all boaters to thoroughly clean, drain, and dry their watercraft before arrival, noting that standing water can harbor harmful organisms.
Remember, AIS decals are mandatory for most watercraft and can be obtained online or at various vendors, but not at check stations.
