Colorado Parks & Wildlife Launches Interactive Smartphone Game to Encourage Outdoor Exploration

Try outdoor adventure with a difference! In collaboration with several partners, Colorado Parks and Wildlife are introducing the Colorado Explorer Campaign – an augmented reality-led outdoor adventure programme, starting on 31 May to 14 July 2024. Participants can undertake Missions across the state of Colorado.

Through the interactive play of the Agents of Discovery mobile app, users learn about local ecosystems, the area’s cultural heritage, and more: in Colorado, their orienteering is based on the local pollinator population, which is supported by the park at Cheyenne Mountain State Park nearby.

Participants who complete three or more missions will be entered into prize drawings if their badges feature the campaign mascot In this programme, the natural wealth of the state is explored, and its beauty becomes appreciated.

The map of the Missions sites criss-crosses the state and twists through the archaeology and Indian history of places including Chimney Rock National Monument in the far south, Erie and Brighton to the northeast, and Castle Rock and several state parks. Check out the Missions near you, or wherever you travel in the state, by downloading the free Agents of Discovery app.

It’s part of CPW’s ‘Play, Learn, Connect’ mission that aims to promote outdoor education and help people live life outside, according to Mary McCormac, CPW’s Statewide Interpretation & Wildlife Viewing Coordinator. ‘Why not use available technology to learn about nature?’ she asked.

Since then, Agents of Discovery has collected more than a dozen industry awards and was named the recipient of the 2020 Society of Outdoor Recreation Professionals Excellence Award. The app makes real-world information fun and game-like, and incentivises kids to get moving, giving educators a whole new way to touch kids where they live.

Plus, CPW is simultaneously promoting the Keep Colorado Wild Pass, which allows Colorado residents to provide $29 a year to wildlife conservation efforts and educational programmes across the state.
