In the remote and rugged Collegiate Peaks Wilderness of Colorado, a determined group of biologists is waging an uphill struggle against extinction. Their mission is a noble one: to reintroduce the state-endangered boreal toad to its historic wetland habitats in the mountains.

In an arduous mission, Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) aquatic biologist Alex Jouney led a team on a challenging trek, carrying heavy bags filled with tadpoles to a high-altitude pond. Their efforts are part of a long-term campaign to combat the devastating impact of chytrid fungus, a puzzling disease that has decimated amphibian populations on a global scale.

In southwest Colorado, the recent discovery of boreal toads reproducing naturally has instilled fresh hope in the project’s mission. “This is fantastic news,” exclaimed Jouney. “If the toads can reproduce in the southwest, there is a chance they can do the same here.” The reintroduction process requires meticulous care, involving the careful transportation of tadpoles from CPW hatcheries and rigorous decontamination procedures to prevent the spread of the deadly fungus.

“We’ll keep stocking tadpoles for the next few years,” explained Jouney. “Then we’ll let nature take its course.”  The team will continue to monitor the wetlands, searching for signs of adult toads and new tadpoles. It’s a waiting game, but one filled with cautious optimism.

This project represents a collaborative effort between CPW, volunteers, and the Arkansas Basin Toad Conservation Team. It’s a testament to the unwavering dedication of those working to preserve Colorado’s unique biodiversity.

As Jouney and his team navigate the challenging terrain, they carry with them the hope that their efforts will help these endangered toads thrive once again in their mountain home.
