Wyoming Cancels Sale of Wildlife-Rich Tract in Jackson Hole

Teton Wildlife Habitat Management Area

The Wyoming Game and Fish Commission has called off the sale of a 320-acre wildlife-rich tract of land in Jackson Hole. The land, which is part of the Teton Wildlife Habitat Management Area, was slated to be purchased from the Bridger-Teton National Forest.

The commission’s decision to forgo the purchase was due to uncertainty surrounding the implementation of a recently approved elk-feeding plan. The plan, which was approved by the Wyoming Legislature in 2023, would allow the Game and Fish Commission to feed elk in the Teton Valley during the winter months.

However, the plan has been met with opposition from some groups, who argue that it would increase elk numbers and lead to conflicts with other wildlife and livestock. The commission is currently reviewing the plan and has not yet made a decision on whether or not to implement it.

In light of the uncertainty surrounding the elk-feeding plan, the commission decided to abandon the purchase of the land. The commission will continue to work with the Bridger-Teton National Forest to find a solution that will benefit both wildlife and the public.

This is a significant development for wildlife conservation in Jackson Hole. The Teton Wildlife Habitat Management Area is an important piece of land that provides habitat for a variety of wildlife species, including elk, bison, pronghorn, and wolves. The cancellation of the sale will help to ensure that this land remains protected for future generations.
