Pack Trail Fire Update: Containment Increases as Firefighters Battle Challenging Conditions

The Pack Trail Fire, burning in the Bridger-Teton and Shoshone National Forests in northwest Wyoming, has reached 67,376 acres as of October 10, 2024. Despite challenging terrain and dry conditions, firefighters have achieved 60% containment. The fire’s cause is currently under investigation.

Located approximately 23 miles southeast of Moran, Wyoming, the fire continues to burn through timber, brush, and undergrowth. A dedicated force of 571 personnel is working tirelessly to suppress the flames and protect structures.

Closures and Evacuations:

While US Highway 26/287 has reopened, motorists should expect potential delays and reduced speed limits due to fire traffic. The following closures remain in effect:

  • Fish Creek and Pack Trail Fire Area, Roads, and Trails Closure Order (#04-03-24-314): This order is in effect through October 15, 2024, unless rescinded.
  • New Pack Trail Fire Area, Road, and Trail Closure Order (# 04-03-24-316): This order, which went into effect on October 9, 2024, will remain in effect until November 1, 2024, unless rescinded.

Evacuations are still in place for certain areas. Residents and visitors should stay informed about the latest evacuation orders and be prepared to leave if necessary.

Fire Behavior and Suppression Efforts:

Fire activity is currently minimal on the western perimeter of the fire. Firefighters are focusing their efforts on holding and securing containment lines on the eastern side, where the terrain is particularly challenging. Variable weather conditions, including increasing winds, could lead to increased fire activity in the coming days.

Smoke Impacts:

Smoke from the Pack Trail Fire is affecting air quality and visibility in the region, including the Dubois area and Jackson Hole valley. Individuals with respiratory sensitivities should take precautions and stay aware of air quality alerts.
