Divide, CO – A rapidly growing wildfire, dubbed the Highland Lakes Fire, has forced mandatory evacuations in Teller County as it rages near the town of Divide. The fire, which ignited Monday afternoon, has already consumed 90.7 acres and is currently 0% contained.

Evacuations Ordered

The Teller County Sheriff’s Office has issued mandatory evacuation orders for several areas, including:

• Aspen Village
  
• Broken Wheel
  
• Golden Bell Lane
  
• Alpine View
  
• Star View Trail
  
• Beaver Lake Place
  
• Beaver Lake Circle
  
• East of Highland Lakes Subdivision

Pre-evacuation warnings are in place for Aspen Moor, Spring Valley subdivisions, and areas along County Road 5 and 51. Residents in these areas are urged to be prepared to leave at a moment’s notice.

Shelter and Animal Evacuations

An evacuation center has been established at the Woodland Park Community Church (800 Valley View Dr, Woodland Park, CO 80863). Small animals can be taken to the Teller County Regional Animal Shelter (308 Weaverville Rd, Divide, CO 80814). The Teller County Fairgrounds in Cripple Creek is accepting large animals and livestock.

School Closures and Medication Access

Summit and Columbine school campuses will be closed tomorrow, with secondary students shifting to remote learning. The Teller County Sheriff’s Office will be providing escorts for evacuated residents to retrieve critical medications starting Tuesday morning. Those needing assistance should call 719-687-9652.

Fire Status

Fire officials reported a slight decrease in fire activity after sunset, but crews continue to battle the blaze. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
