COLORADO SPRINGS, CO – The Department of the Air Force (DAF) has announced Schriever Space Force Base in Colorado as the preferred and final location for Space Delta 15 (DEL 15), a unit dedicated to mission defense operations within the United States Space Force.

This decision follows a comprehensive assessment process that evaluated various factors, including mission requirements, existing infrastructure, community support, environmental considerations, and cost-effectiveness. Schriever Space Force Base emerged as the optimal location to host DEL 15 and its critical mission.

Space Delta 15 will play a vital role in safeguarding U.S. space assets and interests. Its core responsibilities include:

• Protecting critical satellite systems: Ensuring the integrity and functionality of national security, communication, and navigation satellites against potential threats.
• Developing defensive strategies: Continuously evolving tactics and technologies to counter emerging threats in the space domain.
• Enhancing space situational awareness: Maintaining a comprehensive understanding of the space environment, including potential hazards and adversarial activities.

Schriever Space Force Base’s existing infrastructure, skilled workforce, and strategic location make it a natural fit for DEL 15. The base already houses the National Space Defense Center, with which DEL 15 will closely collaborate to enhance space defense capabilities.

This selection reinforces Schriever Space Force Base’s role as a central hub for space operations and national security, further solidifying the U.S. Space Force’s commitment to protecting American interests in the space domain.

With this decision finalized, DEL 15 has achieved initial operational capability. The Department of the Air Force anticipates the unit reaching full operational capability by the summer of 2027.
