BOZEMAN, Montana – A rash of sign thefts has left Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP) officials baffled and seeking the public’s help in identifying those responsible. Over the past few years, more than 20 signs have vanished from various state parks and fishing access sites across southwestern Montana.
The most recent incident occurred in November at Missouri Headwaters State Park, where two “moose crossing” signs were stolen. Earlier this year, Lost Creek State Park was repeatedly targeted, losing three traffic signs and three welcome signs. Other sites hit by the sign snatchers include Lewis & Clark Caverns State Park, Limespur Fishing Access Site, and Williams Bridge Fishing Access Site.
“These thefts are not just a nuisance, they’re a crime against the people of Montana,” stated Linnaea Schroeer, FWP’s regional Parks and Outdoor Recreation Program manager. “Replacing these signs puts a strain on taxpayer dollars and diminishes the experience for visitors who rely on them for safety and information.”
The missing signs range from crucial traffic and safety notices to informational and directional signage. FWP officials are concerned that their absence could lead to confusion, accidents, or damage to natural resources.
FWP game wardens are actively investigating these thefts and urge anyone with information to come forward. Tipsters can contact their local game warden or submit information anonymously through the FWP’s Tip-Mont website at tipmont.mt.gov. Information leading to an arrest and conviction may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000.
“We’re hoping that someone in the community knows something that can help us solve these cases,” Schroeer added. “Even the smallest detail could be crucial in bringing those responsible to justice.”In addition to the financial burden, the missing signs detract from the aesthetic appeal of Montana’s scenic landscapes. FWP officials emphasize that these signs are essential for maintaining order, safety, and visitor enjoyment within state parks and fishing access sites.
As the investigation continues, FWP is taking steps to increase security measures at vulnerable locations. They are also exploring alternative signage options that may be less appealing to thieves.
Anyone with information about the stolen signs is encouraged to contact FWP as soon as possible.
