Routt County is hosting a series of public meetings to discuss Xcel Energy’s “Just Transition Plan,” which outlines the closure of coal-fired power plants in Craig and Hayden by 2028. The plan aims to ensure reliable energy service, reduce emissions, and support economic transitions in affected communities.

The Colorado Public Utilities Commission (PUC) is seeking input from residents, workers, and stakeholders to evaluate the proposal. To facilitate this, the Office of the Utility Consumer Advocate (UCA) is organizing educational sessions to help community members understand the regulatory process and provide impactful public testimony.

Meeting Schedule:
1. Virtual Public Comment Hearing: Monday, April 28, 2025, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. (Registration required).
2. Educational Presentation: Tuesday, April 29, 2025, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Routt County Commissioners Hearing Room, 522 Lincoln Ave., Steamboat Springs.
3. In-Person Public Comment Hearing: Thursday, May 1, 2025, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Hayden Community Center, 495 W. Jefferson Ave., Hayden.

The UCA’s presentations will explain the role of the PUC, decision-making processes, and how to provide compelling testimony. These sessions are designed to empower residents to voice their concerns and perspectives effectively.

The Just Transition Plan is a critical step in addressing the economic and environmental impacts of retiring coal-fired facilities. It includes provisions for job replacement, community support, and the development of clean energy resources. The PUC is expected to make a final decision on the plan by August 2025.

Community members who can not attend the meetings can submit comments via email, phone, or mail. This initiative underscores the importance of public participation in shaping Colorado’s energy future.
