Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) is actively tracking potential wolf dens in northern Colorado, following recent GPS collar data suggesting possible sites. While no dens have been officially confirmed, officials are closely monitoring the movements of collared wolves to determine if pups may be present.

Tracking the Pack’s Movements

With the reintroduction of gray wolves into Colorado’s ecosystem in 2023, wildlife officials have dedicated resources to tracking their adaptation and reproduction. GPS collars fitted on select wolves have indicated repeated movement patterns that align with typical den behaviors, but researchers stress that definitive confirmation requires direct observation.

“If there are pups, they will remain underground for several more weeks,” said a CPW spokesperson. “Right now, we are focused on gathering behavioral evidence before taking further action.”

Public Awareness and Conservation Efforts

The potential for new wolf pups raises both excitement and concerns within local ranching communities and conservation groups. While environmental advocates view this as a major step toward restoring Colorado’s native predator population, livestock owners worry about increased predation risks. CPW emphasizes ongoing efforts to balance ecological restoration with community concerns, including non-lethal deterrence programs.

What Comes Next?

Officials expect more concrete evidence in the coming months as pups—if present—begin venturing out of the dens. CPW urges residents to report any unusual sightings but reminds the public not to interfere with wildlife interactions.
