A new report from the Common Sense Institute suggests that expanding critical mineral mining in Colorado could generate billions for the state’s economy. The study highlights the potential economic impact of renewed mineral extraction, particularly in the Uravan Mineral Belt, which spans Mesa, Montrose, and San Miguel counties.

According to the report, a single mining operation in this region could create over 3,000 jobs and contribute more than $1.3 billion to Colorado’s GDP by 2040. If multiple mining projects are developed, the economic impact could be even greater, with projections estimating 37,743 new jobs statewide and a $7.8 billion boost to the economy.

The report aligns with a recent executive order aimed at increasing domestic mineral production, emphasizing the importance of securing critical resources for clean energy technologies and national security. However, environmental concerns remain a point of contention, as past uranium mining in the Uravan Mineral Belt has raised ecological and health-related issues.

While proponents argue that mining expansion could strengthen Colorado’s economy and reduce reliance on foreign mineral imports, critics warn of potential environmental risks and the need for stringent regulations.
