Western Colorado is facing a rapidly escalating wildfire crisis, with five major fires burning across Montrose, Mesa, and Delta counties. Fueled by lightning strikes, dry conditions, and gusty winds, the blazes have scorched more than 10,000 acres and triggered a statewide disaster declaration.
🔥 South Rim Fire Engulfs Black Canyon
The most destructive of the fires, known as the South Rim Fire, has consumed over 3,500 acres in Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. Containment remains at zero percent. Both the North and South Rims of the park are closed, and Colorado State Highway 347 is shut down at the junction with U.S. Highway 50.
Mandatory evacuations have been issued for:
– Bostwick Park
– Roads M73, N73, N74, and O74
– Zones 1 through 6 in Montrose County
Fire crews have managed to protect the South Rim Visitor Center, though several outbuildings have sustained damage. Aerial operations continue, but suppression efforts are challenged by extreme heat, low humidity, and rugged terrain.
🌫️ Sowbelly Fire Chokes Escalante Canyon
The Sowbelly Fire has burned more than 2,200 acres across Mesa, Delta, and Montrose counties, primarily within the Dominguez-Escalante National Conservation Area. Heavy smoke is visible from Highway 50, and pre-evacuation notices have been issued for residents near Escalante Canyon Road, especially west of the Pot Holes recreation area.
Road closures include:
– ZS Road and 36 4/10 Road
– YS Road and 31 55/100 Road
🔥 Turner Gulch and Wright Draw Fires Threaten Gateway
Two additional fires in Mesa County — Turner Gulch and Wright Draw — have burned a combined 1,300 acres near Highway 141. Evacuations are underway between mile markers 120 and 124. Emergency shelters have been opened in nearby communities.
🔥 Deer Creek Fire Crosses State Line
Originating in Utah, the Deer Creek Fire has crossed into Colorado and now threatens areas west of Paradox. The fire has grown to 7,000 acres, destroying multiple homes and prompting evacuations within a five-mile radius.
🏞️ Closures and Air Quality Concerns
Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is fully closed, including:
– North and South Rim scenic drives
– East Portal Road
– All overlooks and hiking trails
Air quality advisories are in effect across southwestern Colorado due to smoke from multiple fires. Residents are advised to limit outdoor activity, especially those with respiratory conditions.
🛑 Fire Restrictions and Safety Measures
Stage 1 Fire Restrictions are now active across Mesa County, prohibiting:
– Use of personal fireworks
– Campfires outside designated pits
– Agricultural burns without permits
– Smoking near flammable vegetation
Residents are urged to:
– Avoid restricted areas
– Prepare emergency kits
– Monitor updates from local emergency management agencies
🧯 Statewide Response Mobilized
The disaster declaration has activated emergency operations and resource mobilization across the state. Firefighting efforts include ground crews, aerial suppression, and incident management teams working across multiple fronts to contain the fires and protect communities.
