Colorado’s state parks are experiencing another year of exceptionally high visitation, with more than eight million people passing through the system by mid‑2025, according to new figures highlighted by Colorado Parks and Wildlife and the Governor’s Office. The surge continues a long‑running trend of heavy use across the state’s 43 parks, driven by population growth, tourism, and the enduring appeal of outdoor recreation.
Officials note that the pace of visitation is on track to match or exceed last year’s totals, when Colorado’s state parks saw roughly 18.9 million visits, a slight increase over 2023 and part of a steady upward climb since 2022. While numbers remain below the pandemic‑era peak of 20 million visits in 2021, the current trajectory underscores the continued pressure on trails, campgrounds, and natural resources.
State leaders have emphasized the economic benefits of the surge. In 2024, park visitation generated approximately $147 million in revenue, supporting local communities and funding conservation and maintenance efforts across the system. Popular activities range from rafting the Arkansas River to hiking, fishing, and winter recreation, drawing both Colorado residents and visitors from around the world.
At the same time, the rising demand has renewed conversations about capacity management. Some parks have already implemented reservation systems during peak periods, and Colorado Parks and Wildlife is evaluating additional measures to balance access with resource protection. Officials continue to encourage visitors to plan ahead, especially during holiday weekends and high‑traffic summer months.
With visitation climbing earlier in the year than usual, state agencies expect continued strain on popular destinations. The trend highlights both the enduring draw of Colorado’s natural landscapes and the ongoing challenge of managing them sustainably as the state’s population and tourism economy grow.
