Montana Sheriff Pleads Guilty to Illegal Deer Kill

In a shocking turn of events, Treasure County Sheriff Will Seastrom has admitted to hunting violations and pleaded guilty to illegally killing a mule deer buck. The charges stem from an incident that occurred on November 17th, 2023.

According to court records, Seastrom was cited by Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP) for two offenses: hunting or killing over the limit and license, permit, or tag offenses. Seastrom reportedly used his wife’s deer tag to bag the animal, exceeding his own limit.

Seastrom, elected sheriff last year, expressed remorse for his actions in a written statement released to the public. He acknowledged his poor decision-making and emphasized that the incident occurred while he was off duty. He further stated that he immediately self-reported the violation to the Montana POST Council and has been cooperating with the investigation.

On December 5th, Seastrom appeared in Treasure County Justice Court, where he pleaded guilty to both charges. He was sentenced to pay a total of $870 in fines and will have his hunting, fishing, and trapping privileges suspended for two years.

The incident has drawn significant attention and sparked controversy within Treasure County. Some residents have expressed disappointment in Seastrom’s conduct, questioning his judgment and fitness to hold the position of sheriff. Others have voiced support for Seastrom, arguing that he has taken responsibility for his actions and deserves a second chance.

The Montana POST Council, responsible for overseeing law enforcement standards and ethics, is currently reviewing the case and will determine whether Seastrom will face any additional disciplinary action. The outcome of this review could have a significant impact on Seastrom’s career as sheriff.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of ethical conduct, particularly for those entrusted with upholding the law. As the investigation and review process continues, the future of Sheriff Seastrom remains uncertain. The community awaits the final decision from the Montana POST Council, which will determine the consequences of his actions and potentially shape the future of law enforcement in Treasure County.
