Colorado Springs, CO – A recent coyote attack on a young child in a Colorado Springs neighborhood has sparked concern and prompted a swift response from Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW). The incident, which occurred on Thanksgiving Day, has highlighted the potential dangers of wildlife encounters in urban areas and the importance of responsible cohabitation.

The four-year-old victim was reportedly playing outside when she and another child encountered a coyote crouching behind a tree. Mistaking the animal for a dog, the children approached it, triggering a sudden attack. The coyote lunged at the girl, inflicting injuries to her head that necessitated an overnight hospital stay. Fortunately, the girl’s father intervened, scaring the coyote away and preventing further harm.

CPW, along with partner agencies, has launched an extensive search for the coyote involved in the attack. Due to the difficulty in identifying the specific animal, authorities plan to lethally remove any coyotes found in the vicinity of the incident. The carcasses will undergo testing for human DNA and diseases such as rabies to aid in the investigation.

“This incident serves as a stark reminder that wildlife, even in urban settings, can pose a risk to public safety,” stated a CPW spokesperson. “We are committed to ensuring the safety of our community and will take all necessary measures to manage wildlife populations and mitigate potential threats.”

CPW is urging residents to exercise caution and implement preventative measures to minimize the risk of wildlife encounters. These measures include:

• Hazing: Making loud noises, throwing objects, and using deterrents to discourage animals from approaching.
• Securing Attractants: Properly storing garbage, pet food, and other potential food sources.
• Supervising Children and Pets: Keeping a close eye on children and pets when outdoors, especially in areas known to harbor wildlife.
• Reporting Aggressive Behavior: Contacting CPW immediately if any wildlife exhibits aggressive or unusual behavior.

“Coexistence with wildlife requires vigilance and responsibility,” emphasized the CPW spokesperson. “By taking proactive steps, we can reduce the likelihood of conflicts and ensure the safety of both humans and animals.”
