Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) is urging residents to stay vigilant after two recent coyote attacks on leashed dogs in Colorado Springs. The incidents occurred at Palmer Park and Rockrimmon Open Space, both areas known for frequent wildlife activity.
Officials warn that coyotes become more aggressive during denning season, which lasts from February through June, as they protect their young. The recent attacks highlight the growing interactions between urban wildlife and pet owners, with CPW emphasizing the importance of responsible outdoor practices.
“These types of encounters are more common during spring and early summer when coyotes are raising their pups,” said a CPW spokesperson. “While they generally avoid humans, they can see dogs as threats to their territory.”
Residents are advised to keep pets leashed, avoid feeding wildlife, and report aggressive coyote behavior to local authorities. CPW recommends making loud noises or using deterrents like whistles or water sprays if confronted by a coyote.
