Colorado’s position as a cornerstone in U.S. aerospace research is facing uncertainty as proposed federal budget cuts aim to scale back several long-running NASA missions helmed by scientists at the University of Colorado Boulder and affiliated labs.
Key Missions at Risk
Two flagship projects—MAVEN (Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution) and New Horizons—are among those facing operational shutdown. MAVEN has been crucial to studying Mars’ upper atmosphere since 2013, while New Horizons continues to transmit data from the Kuiper Belt following its historic Pluto flyby in 2015.
Dr. Helena Ruiz, a CU Boulder astrophysicist, warns of irreversible setbacks: “These missions are scientific powerhouses. Ending them prematurely abandons key planetary research.”
Funding Shifts and Strategic Priorities 
The Fiscal Year 2026 budget redirects billions toward the Artemis lunar initiative and expanding commercial contracts. But critics say this comes at the expense of vital planetary science. MAVEN and New Horizons would receive only minimal funding, halting data collection and analysis efforts.
Impacts on Colorado’s Aerospace Sector
Colorado employs over 30,000 people in aerospace-related fields, making it one of the top states for space industry jobs. Local lawmakers argue the proposed budget could disrupt education pipelines, workforce stability, and collaborative research.
Rep. Megan Hartley (D-CO) stated at a town hall: “We’re not just funding rockets; we’re building futures.”
Political Fallout and Scientific Advocacy
Western state legislators are mobilizing to oppose the cuts, citing the strategic and educational value of deep space missions. Analysts believe the shift reflects short-term political pressures ahead of the 2026 midterms.
“Interplanetary research takes time, but its legacy shapes generations,” said Mark Schulz, a former NASA advisor in Golden.
