Colorado Buffaloes Football 2025 Season Preview

The Colorado Buffaloes are gearing up for the 2025 college football season with high expectations and a dramatically reshaped roster. After a 9–4 finish last year and a narrow loss in the Alamo Bowl, the program is entering a new chapter—one defined by fresh leadership, deeper talent, and a culture shift under head coach Deion Sanders.

New Faces, New Fire

The most notable change is at quarterback. Kaidon Salter, a dynamic dual-threat transfer, steps into the spotlight following the departure of Shedeur Sanders to the NFL. Salter brings speed, vision, and a proven ability to extend plays—qualities that could redefine Colorado’s offensive identity.

Joining him is five-star freshman Julian Lewis, a national standout who’s expected to redshirt or serve as a backup. The running back room also sees a major overhaul, with Micah Welch, Dallan Hayden, and DeKalon Taylor competing for carries. NFL Hall of Famer Marshall Faulk now coaches the unit, tasked with reviving one of the least productive rushing attacks in the country.

On defense, Colorado adds muscle to the front seven with Alabama transfer Jehiem Oatis anchoring the line. DJ McKinney and Arden Walker return to lead a unit that struggled against the run last season but now looks more aggressive and better equipped.

Culture Over Hype

Coach Sanders continues to emphasize discipline, accountability, and personal growth. His off-field expectations include a classroom dress code and behavioral standards that reflect his commitment to developing character alongside athleticism. The message is clear: being a Buffalo means more than just playing football.

What to Watch

Running Game Revival
Last season’s rushing stats were dismal. If Colorado can establish a consistent ground game, it will open up the playbook and take pressure off Salter.

Quarterback Chemistry
Salter’s mobility and arm strength offer new possibilities, but chemistry with receivers like Omarion Miller will be key to unlocking explosive plays.

Defensive Toughness
Stopping the run remains a top priority. With new talent and a more physical approach, the Buffs aim to flip the script on last year’s defensive woes.

Folsom Field Gets a Facelift

Fans attending games in Boulder will notice major upgrades. The season opener against Georgia Tech will feature a “Stripe Out” with alternating black and white sections. Drone shows, military flyovers, gourmet food options, and interactive videoboards are all part of the enhanced experience. The student section has been rebranded as “The Charge,” with students decked out in all white to energize the stadium.

Key Matchups

– Aug. 29: Georgia Tech (home opener)
– Oct.–Nov.: Big 12 gauntlet includes BYU, Iowa State, Utah, Arizona State, and Kansas State
– Late Season: Potential bowl implications loom in November

Final Take

Colorado is no longer a rebuilding program—they’re contenders. With a more balanced offense, a deeper defense, and a maturing team culture, the Buffaloes are poised to make noise in the Big 12. A bowl appearance is likely, and if Salter delivers on his promise, a top-tier finish isn’t out of reach.
