Bear Activity Surges Across Colorado Ahead of Winter

As autumn deepens, Colorado’s black bears are on the move—scouring neighborhoods, forests, and roadways for food before hibernation. Wildlife officials report a sharp uptick in bear sightings and encounters statewide, prompting renewed safety campaigns.

The Colorado State Patrol has launched a seasonal alert urging drivers to slow down and remain vigilant in bear-prone areas. Their campaign, titled “Give Me a Brake,” emphasizes the risk of bear-vehicle collisions, especially in wooded corridors and mountain passes.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife reminds residents to secure trash, remove bird feeders, and avoid leaving pet food outdoors. Bears are driven by instinct to consume up to 20,000 calories per day in preparation for winter denning.

The surge in activity is expected to continue through late October, with bears becoming increasingly bold as natural food sources dwindle.
