Colorado is enduring a severe surge in heat-related medical emergencies, pushing the state toward record-breaking illness rates as the summer season progresses. The oppressive heat reached a breaking point earlier this month in Colorado Springs when temperatures soared to a 57-year daily record of 97 degrees Fahrenheit. Emergency responders from the Colorado Springs Fire Department were forced to declare a mass casualty event during the outdoor Tacos and Tequila Festival at UCHealth Park after attendees began collapsing in the severe afternoon heat.
First responders ultimately treated seventy-two patients on-site for severe heat-related illnesses, ranging from heat exhaustion to severe dehydration, with seven individuals requiring transport to local hospitals for advanced medical intervention. The sustained, extreme temperatures are also actively disrupting education operations across the Front Range. Notably, the Poudre School District was forced to announce early dismissals for multiple school buildings that lack adequate air conditioning systems, prioritizing student safety as the state’s heatwave persists unabated.
