Facing sustained enrollment declines and shifting regional demographics, the Poudre School District has announced a sweeping proposal to close nine schools and consolidate two others by the start of the 2027-2028 academic year. The difficult preliminary recommendation follows a seventeen-month comprehensive analysis of facility utilization, transportation impacts, and program capacity across the Fort Collins area. Under the current plan, affected elementary schools would include Beattie, Irish, Johnson, Putnam, and Timnath, alongside several mountain-area campuses and Blevins Middle School. Additionally, Centennial High School and Poudre Community Academy are slated to be consolidated into a newly formed institution. While the Board of Education will host community listening sessions and will not make a final decision until late October, district leadership has emphasized that the closures are a necessary measure to responsibly maintain equitable and robust educational experiences for a shrinking student population.
