Emergency Repairs Begin on Interstate 70 Hanging Lake Tunnel Following Concrete Damage

The Colorado Department of Transportation has launched an emergency repair project on Interstate 70 through Glenwood Canyon to address structural damage inside the Hanging Lake Tunnel. The tunnel complex carries four lanes of interstate traffic through rugged canyon geology in Garfield County, serving as the sole east-west interstate artery across the northern Rockies. CDOT engineering teams ordered the urgent intervention following inspections that detected localized concrete deterioration along the tunnel lining.

Contractors mobilized specialized repair equipment to secure loose debris, shore affected overhead sections, and patch damaged concrete along the roadway deck and tunnel walls. Work is being performed under continuous lane reductions to allow industrial repair rigs safe operating room while keeping passenger and commercial traffic moving. Transportation officials emphasized that structural shoring must be completed before sustained freezing temperatures set into the canyon floor.

Motorists traveling through Glenwood Canyon should plan for single-lane restrictions and shoulder closures through the tunnel approaches. The narrowed configuration requires drivers to reduce travel speeds to 40 miles per hour, with commercial motor vehicles required to maintain lower gears on the approach viaducts. CDOT reported that while traffic continues to move during non-peak hours, weekend and holiday travel may experience backups extending west of Dotsero.

Glenwood Canyon remains one of the most operationally challenging highway environments in the United States, subject to mudslides, rockfall, and harsh freeze-thaw cycles that place extreme strain on concrete infrastructure. CDOT has deployed specialized monitoring instrumentation to assess vibration levels inside the tunnel bores while heavy drilling and structural injection work are conducted. Engineering supervisors noted that rapid mitigation is necessary to prevent wider structural spalling that could force prolonged full closures.

State highway maintenance divisions are coordinating emergency response protocols with Garfield County emergency management and the Colorado State Patrol. Variable message boards along I-70 between Grand Junction and Silverthorne are alerting long-distance freight carriers of ongoing lane closures. CDOT expects the emergency stabilization phase to conclude within several weeks, after which long-term preventive maintenance schedules will be reviewed for the tunnel corridor
