The smoke has barely cleared from the valleys of southern Colorado, but emergency management officials are already pivoting from one extreme threat to another. Following an exceptionally dry winter, the Aspen Acres Fire exploded across Pueblo and Custer counties. Now, the resulting 100,000-acre burn scar has set the stage for severe flash flooding and debris flows as monsoon moisture arrives.
A Tinderbox Winter and the Aspen Acres Catalyst
The crisis currently threatening state infrastructure began months before the first spark. The area experienced very little snow over the winter, leaving the terrain deeply parched and primed for disaster. When the human-caused Aspen Acres Fire ignited on June 29, high winds drove the flames through the dry, standing fuels at a terrifying pace.

Today, the fire is the seventh-largest in Colorado history, burning over 101,900 acres and destroying 851 structures—including at least 337 homes—in the Beulah and Colorado City areas. While firefighters have achieved over 60% containment, the blaze left behind a devastating ecological consequence: an entirely stripped landscape.
When severe wildfires move slowly across a landscape, they do more than just burn the vegetation that usually breaks up rainfall and absorbs water. The extreme heat causes burning plant matter to release gases that penetrate the soil, condense as they cool, and form a waxy, water-repellent coating.
The Second Disaster: Burn Scar Flash Floods
With the arrival of monsoon season, that hardened, hydrophobic soil is now Colorado’s biggest vulnerability.
The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) and the National Weather Service have issued urgent warnings for flash flooding and mudslides, particularly over the Aspen Acres burn scar. Because the scorched earth cannot absorb the incoming rainfall, even moderate storms can act like water hitting concrete. The runoff instantly channels ash, rocks, and charred timber down the mountainsides, creating fast-moving rivers of debris.

Fire crews near Rye have proactively engaged in “contour felling”—tactically dropping damaged trees horizontally across the slopes to control runoff and curb erosion—but the risk to nearby infrastructure remains incredibly high.
Warnings for Motorists and Residents
CDOT is urging drivers across southern Colorado to prepare for sudden travel hazards, noting that rain falling miles away can trigger rapid mudslides downhill without warning. Fast-moving water and rockfalls can quickly wash out canyon roads or trap vehicles in debris flows.
State officials have reinforced several critical safety directives for those traveling near the Aspen Acres perimeter. The most crucial rule is to turn around instead of trying to cross flooded areas, as it takes just 12 inches of rushing water to carry away a small vehicle, and the road surface beneath the floodwaters may be completely washed away. Motorists must also beware of canyon corridors. If mud or water is flowing onto the highway, they should safely pull over before reaching the flow area. Finally, drivers should avoid unstable slopes and never stop under overpasses or steep terrain during heavy rain. If trapped by a debris slide, staying inside the vehicle is advised unless water begins entering the cabin.
While the monsoon rains bring desperately needed moisture to the region, the total loss of vegetation across the Aspen Acres burn scar means the threat to Beulah Valley and surrounding communities is far from over.
